It's common for a child to mess up his bedroom, and it’s really no easy feat telling him to clean up - Tantrum or a wacky face with tongue out will probably be the only response you will get. But don't worry! There is a simple way to help your kids learn how to tidy up after himself:

Step 1: Throw everything onto the floor

The first step in sorting out items is to place everything on the floor. Yes, this may create one giant mess in the beginning but it is actually the fastest way to get things organized!

Step 2: Put all clothes on the bed

A big pile of mess on the floor can be overwhelming, so it's important to break them down into smaller parts. Tackle the clothing first! separate their clothes from the rest of the items and place them on the bed.

Step 3: Segregate by rooms

First, prepare properly labelled baskets or container bins (living room, play room, etc) for your kids. Second, place them in respective baskets. Finally, when all items have been accounted for, return them to their respective rooms and locations.

Step 4: Clean or dirty?

Now we're only left with clothes! Ask your kids to quickly make two separate piles for clean and dirty clothes. Teach them to inspect their clothes by sniffing and watching out for stains. Once they have finished, they can bring the dirty pile to the laundry.

Step 5: Vacuuming

Now that we've gotten everything out of the way, it's time to do some vacuuming!

Step 6: Make a checklist with them

Studies show that checklists help people stay motivated and improve their time management. This applies to kids too! Help them recall the 5 steps of cleaning their rooms, and translate them into a checklist. Put it up at a visible place in their rooms. This will guide them on how to go about fixing their rooms even without your help.

Keep in mind that imparting these things with your kids might be hard in the beginning. Just give them time to learn and adjust to the routine. Before you know it, you no longer have to remind them to clean their rooms every single day. It becomes habit!
