Crib is the most comfortable place where a new born baby can sleep, play and enjoy doing other little activities. It is the place where the baby spends most of his time and mostly remains unattended when he is in his crib. So, along with being comfortable, the crib should also be safe. Some babies sleep in their crib up to the age of 2-3 years which is actually the time to go into the big and real bed. Thus, the sturdiness of the crib should also be ensured as you cannot guess that up to what age your baby will use it. Here we are mentioning some tips that will guide you to choose the best and safe crib for your little baby:
1. Always buy the new crib
No doubt that the second-hand cribs can also be in good condition but you should always prefer to buy the new one. The main reason for this is the safety standards. New cribs are manufactured with more safety features as compared to the old ones.
Check its finishing
The first thing to be checked is the space between the slats which should not be more than 2 and 3/8 inches. Secondly, check the whole crib for protruding nuts, screws, knobs, sharp edges and other things that can harm your baby. This point also recommends buying the new crib as with the time, old cribs can easily acquire these problems. Also check that whole of the crib is assembled tightly. You don’t need to put pressure on it but you can check by rotating it to all sides and finding if any side or part is loosely assembled.
Selecting mattress for the crib
Mostly the mattress is not sold along with the crib. But, it is better to buy the mattress at the same time as it would enable you to choose the best one that will give a good fit. As recommended, the mattress should be at least 27¼ inches in width, 51 and 5/8inches in length with the maximum thickness of 6 inches.
Adjustable mattress height
This feature is not provided in all the baby cribs and that’s why you need to check for it. When you will place your baby in the crib, the adjustable mattress will make the process easy as you can move it up and down when required. Another feature is that you can lower the mattress height when your baby will learn to sit on his own and pulling him up with the support of his hands. It with prevent him from falling down.
There are two main points that you need to examine about the railings. First is that railings should not be decorative as they may contain sharp edges. Secondly, the modern cribs usually contain the teething rails that prevent your baby from teething the hard wood and swallowing harmful things like paint, splinters or anything else.
Never buy a crib with drop sides
This is common design but you should avoid as it can cause serious injuries to the baby in the case it become loose or get detached.
