Shelves command presence once put in a space. They are usually larger and taller in size compared to your other furniture. Because of its dominance, it is important to pay more attention to what you put in it. Treat it as an essential part of your home décor – as important as deciding what colors your walls should be, and whether or not you should splurge on that clock!
Styling your shelves can be a hard task – but we’ve found that if you follow these 8 simple tips, you’ll be on the road to styling your perfect shelfie in no time!
1. Add books for a good foundation
Books are the foundation to any shelf-styling venture you embark on. Gather all your books of different shapes, sizes and color.
Start by putting different books together to see how they look like on the shelf. Books with colorful spines will add a pop of vibrancy to an otherwise plain shelf. On the other hand, monochrome spines can give off a minimalist vibe – it all depends on what kind of aesthetic you’re looking for!
Play with the different ways you place the books. Horizontal, diagonal or vertical – the ball is in your court. Once you have your foundation of books set, you’re ready to get down to some serious shelf styling!
2. Plants are your friends too!
After laying the foundation of books, it’s time to add some green! Take a trip down to your nearest nursery and pick up some small plants that would look great on your shelf. Cactus and succulents will work best for this, as they require minimal maintenance – but this doesn’t mean you should abandon them entirely!
3. Decorative accents
Most of us have random figurines and objects lying around the house that we feel have no purpose or place for them. For some of us, it could be a completely odd statue of a horse…or an old musician’s bust.
Before you throw them out, try placing it on your shelves! You’ll see that the utter randomness of those figurines will put a quirky spin on things to the overall look.
As added decorative accents, you can place your collection of trinkets in shadow boxes, mini wooden shelves and trinket trays. Just getting a simple saucer (from your kitchen) would make for a great trinket tray – plus, you don’t have to spend extra money as well!
4. Jazz it up with metallic elements
A little glam never hurts! Instead of trying so hard to add more color to your shelves, why not take it up a notch by adding metallic accents?
Experiment with the different kinds of metallic décor out there – bronze, copper, silver or gold! It’s best to stick to one kind of metal to keep to a consistent theme and design.
5. Decorative boxes to sneakily hide the clutter
Yes, your shelves may be on point – but is it practical? Add some of that with decorative boxes to sneakily hide the clutter that accumulate every once in awhile. You’ve worked so hard to style your shelves, keep it that way by putting in a contingency plan for when clutter comes around.
You’ll be eternally thankful to yourself for placing a storage box on your shelf!
6. Add a frame – something personal or meaningful
The shelf isn’t truly yours unless you adorn it with something meaningful or personal to you. This could be a photo of your family or loved one – or maybe even a certain pattern that you like.
As a rule of thumb, frames should be about 50%-70% bigger than all the other items in the shelf. Like books, the rectangular shapes will help establish some balance and structure into the whole look.
7. Something vintage
Take a trip down to some weekend flea markets and you just might find something
old new for yourself! If thrift vintage shopping in Singapore isn’t your thing, vintage markets in Bangkok might just be for you.
Scout them out and you’ll find pretty affordable vintage knick-knacks from 4 SGD and above. You can score items like vintage candlestick holders, tons of vintage clocks, silverware and china.
Vintage accents will give an interesting diversity in your shelf. The mix between old and new also adds more character and personality to your space!
Candles are a great way to add even more dimension to your shelves. You can get a variety of candles – tea lights, votive, jar candles…the possibilities are almost endless!
Not only do they smell great, they look good too. There’s something about the presence and scent of a candle that instantly makes you feel relaxed and calm. Incorporate that atmosphere into your shelves, and burn one too while you’re at it. Just make sure your shelves aren’t too low or something might burn!
Ditch the messy shelf look and start styling them. You'd be surprised at how much it can change the entire atmosphere and ambience of your space!
