Here's How You Should Really Be Taking Care Of Your Wooden Furniture

Wooden furniture are staple pieces that are present in almost every home, whether in the form of dining tables or chairs or TV consoles. Widely known as a highly durable material, it's thus unsurprising that wood remains as one of the most popular materials for furniture. After dropping a significant amount of money on your wooden furniture, you'd definitely want to take good care of them, so that they can always look their best and most importantly, last for a long time!

Here are 3 simple and effective ways that demonstrate how you should really be taking care of your wooden furniture.

1. First things first, dust off your furniture

To kickstart the process of cleaning your wooden furniture, your first step should involve dusting off your furniture. While this might sound like a dreadful chore to add to your list of household chores, this is perhaps one of the best ways to keep your wooden furniture in good shape. Airborne particles like dust can create a filmy layer on wood, which could scratch its surface. Regular dusting off your furniture prevents this build-up from happening in the first place.

Dusting your furniture when preparing your home for guests is also a great way to protect your friends and family who may suffer from allergies or asthma.

To properly dust your wooden furniture, opt for soft and gentle materials like old cotton T-shirts, microfibre cloths or classic feather dusters, to avoid scratches and damage to your furniture.

2. Stop using all-purpose cleaning sprays!

All-purpose cleaning sprays may be marketed as being usable for "all-purposes" but they might actually be too harsh for your wooden furniture. Instead, to give your wooden furniture a good wipe and to get rid of any stains, try opting for something that's a little more natural, like a homemade cleaning solution.

What you'll need:

  • 1/2 cup Natural White Vinegar
  • 1.9L Warm water
  • Bucket
  • Soft cleaning cloth
  • Microfibre cloth

  • Mix the warm water and white vinegar in a bucket until well combined.
  • Dip the soft cleaning cloth into the mixture and wring it thoroughly, so it's not dripping wet. The cloth should be damp, not soaked.
  • Lightly push the cloth into the pits of your wood furniture using your finger, to allow the solution to penetrate to the crevices, knots and cracks.
  • Dip the cloth into the water and vinegar mixture again, if needed and repeat the 2nd step.
  • Once the table is clean, use the microfibre cloth to dry it.

3. Use some homemade furniture polish for a shiny, brand-new finish

Think your wooden furniture is starting to look a little dull? Try making your own homemade polish to refresh your furniture, to leave behind a shiny finish that will remind you of how your wooden furniture looked like when they came home for the first time.

What you'll need:

  • 1/4 cup Olive Oil
  • 1/4 cup Natural White Vinegar
  • Bottle
  • Soft cleaning cloth

  • Mix the olive oil and white vinegar in a bottle until well combined.
  • Apply a small amount of the mixture on a soft cloth to your wood furniture and buff its surface to a shine you desire. The olive oil will help to replenish moisture whilst the vinegar will help to kill any bacteria, with its natural antibacterial properties.

NOTE: Before giving this method a go, always remember to spot test it on a small area of your furniture. This process should also not be done more than once or twice annually.
