  • To give the illusion of a larger master bedroom, the mattress is placed directly on the floor. While it was tempting to go for movable wardrobes to reduce costs and retain flexibility for the bedrooms, built-in wardrobe was chosen to achieve the full height to contrast the low bed, thereby accentuating the height of the rooms. While the original design intent was for the wardrobes to have extra tall doors that almost touch the ceiling, to draw the eyes upwards to further accentuate the height of the rooms, this was not possible because of limitation in the development’s lift size. The tall doors had to be separated into 2 parts to fit the lift, thereby creating a horizontal gap which was deliberately positioned at the height of the curtain pelmet to reduce the visual impact. Other design considerations for the wardrobes include recessed handles to maintain a streamlined look, and paying more for Formica’s ColorCore laminate as the color goes all the way through the material, and it comes in dimensions of 1.22m x 3.05m; thereby eliminating ugly dark edges and the need for joints.
  • Two sets of glass sliding doors open out to the master bedroom’s L-shape balcony. Teak wood plastic composite decking from Nelson Parquet was used outdoors for their durability. For a good night’s rest, ripple fold black out curtains from Drapes Studio hang behind pelmets designed to hide the curtain tracks. The curtains help to not only block out light but also reduce noise from the surroundings. While the preference was for the ceiling to be as clean as possible, practicality won. The ceiling fan has been very useful as an alternative to air conditioning and is effective to help circulate air given Singapore’s humid conditions. To minimize the visual impact to the ceiling, Alaska’s Aspen 38” fan was chosen for its small size and streamlined look. Where the ceiling meet the walls, shadow gap was introduced to create a subtle shadow line effect.
  • Servomuto (Italian for valet stand) from Flou was designed by Luigi Lanzi in 2011 with a double function as a chair and coat stand. The clean lines of this piece of furniture work well with the generally clean lines of the master bedroom.
  • Here is another close up of Flou’s Servomuto with the wardrobe cladded with Formica’s ColorCore laminate. As the color in Formica’s ColorCore laminate goes all the way through the material, there are no ugly dark edges.
  • Flanking the bed are a pair of lamps that once adorned a cashier counter in what was once Singapore’s oldest departmental store - Robinsons. The lamps stand on TUF’s Tangent side tables made of rare Statuario marble. As a restful sleep is most important, the queen size mattress is from Sealy while the 100% bamboo lyocell sheets are from Aevary. The sheets are spun from pure bamboo pulp, have a lustrous sheen and yield a silky smooth handfeel.
  • The pair of lamps flanking the bed feature Mercury, the Roman god of commerce, messengers, eloquence, travelers, and trickery. The same image of Mercury once adorned the iconic facade of the Robinsons building in Raffles Place. Sadly, the building burnt down in 1972, and the 162-year-old store closed down in 2021. The lamps which once adorned a cashier counter in what was once Singapore’s oldest departmental store - Robinsons, are a prized possession and stand on a pair of beautifully crafted Tangent side tables from TUF. The Tangent - a circle and a straight plane touching at a point, but not intersecting - side tables are made of rare Statuario marble. Statuario marble, as the name suggests, has been used for the creation of statues, sculptures and monumental works (to name one, Michelangelo made extensive use of Statuario marble).
