  • On my second edition of the Renders vs Reality series, let's look at the kitchen! This section is usually the one section in a house that requires the most carpentry, and hence the 3D rendering here is extremely important. I wish I knew all the nitty gritty that I know now to ask my ID back then, but when I first saw this render, I was like "this is nice, let's do it!" But I wish I had asked a bit more questions...
  • Here's our real kitchen, 3.5 years into using it! Some regrets/ questions I didn't ask: 1) Depth of carpentry: you can see that my refrigerator clearly budges out vs what was rendered 2) Boxing up of pipes: it was communicated but not shown in the render, it might seem minor, but clearly the aesthetics are much different between a flatter wall and a boxed up one. Could we have made it slimmer, or curved? 3) Shelving compartments: again, it was discussed but never rendered, so we really didn't account for the actual space we wanted inside. We had 2x thinner "spice" drawers, which we later decided to utilise one for instant noodles/ alcohol, but I wished we had took those into consideration when planning the space
  • This was how it looks during carpentry, you can see it's all simple boxes, and on hindsight I wish I had asked my ID to show a render of how we'd utilise the space inside so we can "imagine" what can go into these individual storage.
  • And here's a closer look of the 2 "spice" racks, which luckily, one side fits instant noodles sizes so perfectly, and the below is filled with alcohol (haha). Otherwise, it could really become an awkward space.
  • On the other side, the render includes my sink area, the windows to my 2 bathrooms, and the area near my service yard. If you've seen my kitchen post, you'd know I had a major renovation from the previous owner where I knocked down a door to the service yard, hence opening up the space. This resulted in my kitchen and laundry area to be in one big space, and I knew from the beginning that we'd do indoor drying since both of us are mostly at the office.
  • ... and here's my actual sink area! We actually removed 2 items from the render, the extension and the wooden plank underneath the window. The former was because of cost, which now has been used as a recycling corner. The latter was a design problem, which we feel that we'll always hit the plank accidentally since we'll always be near there washing at the sink. Saved some money regardless! Otherwise, this area is pretty straightforward, and I only wish we had more space for storage. No regrets for the open shelving though, since it still brings character to the house :)
  • And to the most "unglam" part, our service yard haha. I've discussed this in much detail in another post, but this is one of my main displeasure from my ID when the wooden plank sizing didn't align with the space. Should I have been a "Karen" then to make things right? Guess I'll never know 🥲
