The need to WFH for extended periods of time + co-working at the dining table = drove us to move out of our old place. The dimensions of our study were carefully considered and it was sized to hold exactly 02 x 1.8m-length height-adjustable work tables and ergonomic work chairs. Nothing more, nothing less.
Working from home for long hours meant that it was not tenable to have fixed-height desks and crummy chairs. We particularly don’t understand those setups where there are custom-built long tables with drawers, but the chairs cannot even be fully pushed in. We decided to go with a combination of Omnidesk + Herman Miller, and it has worked wonderfully for us so far.
We both appreciate having an open space in front of us when we work in our study instead of having to face the wall. From this angle, there is minimal glare on our monitor screens and we will always look well-lit on Zoom calls, thanks to the diffused lighting through the windows. However, sometimes when it is too bright outside, it can be a bit glaring for our eyes.
We replaced this section of our study wall with a strange mix of useful storage options, including an open bookshelf and a display cabinet. It was tempting to make the display cabinet bigger but we decided that if it became bigger, we would just end up buying more frivolous things to fill it up. As such, it was sized to just accommodate our existing “treasures”.
The entrance to our study is positioned diagonally and has French doors that open outwards to avoid having a dead corner. Not only is the doorway bigger than usual, it also facilitates our daily workflow, especially outside in the dry kitchen, without compromising any functionality. The proximity of the dining table to the study allows us to grab a quick bite even during the busiest of WFH days. The dining table also acts as a secondary working location if one of us has to take a confidential call. And yes, technically we can watch tv from this vantage point.
