How To Choose The Right Knives?
Consider Your Cooking Needs
Your perfect knife depends on the food you cook most often. For general chopping, slicing, and dicing, a chef’s knife works best. For peeling and delicate work, we recommend a smaller paring knife. If you slice bread or soft foods regularly, a serrated bread knife is essential. Ideally, one should own a set of knives to cover any variety of kitchen tasks efficiently.
Knife Blade Shape and Size
- Wide, curved blades: Good for chopping vegetables and fruits
- Narrow, pointed blades: Better for cutting raw meat and other detailed tasks
Blades typically range from 3 inches (paring) to 12 inches (chef’s knife), so pick a size that feels comfortable and suits your tasks!
Knife Blade Material
- Stainless steel: Rust-resistant and easy to maintain - but may dull faster.
- High-carbon steel: Holds its sharp edge for longer, but requires more care to avoid rust.
- High-carbon stainless steel: Combines durability with good edge retention - ideal for most home cooks.
- Damascus steel: Known for strength, sharpness, and unique layered patterns.
Focus on Weight, Balance, and Handle Comfort
A knife should feel balanced and comfortable in your hand to improve control. Look for ergonomic, non-slip handles which are designed for a secure grip even when wet.
Consider Knife Sets for Convenience
Ideally, a knife set gives you everything you need for effortless, everyday prep - and looks great on your countertop! Discover our knife sets for great value, matched styles, and the convenience of having the right blade for every recipe.

Frequently Asked Questions About Knives & Kitchenware
How can I tell if my knife blade is sharp enough?
A sharp knife should be able to slice through items like tomatoes or paper easily, with minimal force. If you notice crushing or slipping, it’s time to hone or sharpen your knife!
How should I care for and clean my knives?
To maintain your kitchen knives, hand-wash them with mild soap and dry thoroughly to prevent rust or damage. To minimise dullness, we recommend regular honing to maintain a sharp edge, or professional sharpening. Make sure to store your knives safely in a knife holder and use a cutting board to prevent accidents and prolong your knife’s life!
What is the difference between Japanese knives and Western knives?
Japanese knives are typically lighter, and have thinner, sharper blades. This makes them ideal for precision and delicate slicing tasks. On the other hand, Western knives are generally thicker and heavier, designed for a wider variety of kitchen tasks. Both styles offer unique benefits!
Why is it worth investing in quality knives?
Good knives stay sharp longer, make chopping easier, and help keep you safe in the kitchen. They feel more comfortable to use, and last much longer than cheaper options. For a complete cooking experience, we recommend pairing your knives with other essential kitchen tools and utensils to make meal prep easier and more enjoyable.
