  • Welcome to the entrance of Casito Chan! This is a space that is used multiple times a day, so it was important that it fit our daily habits. To conceptualize this space, we wrote down what we needed to do before leaving home, and what we typically did upon returning home. And then we organized our furniture choices around these needs. The space is dominated by three things: 1) the massive pegboard 2) the shoe cabinet 3) the curvy hook for our bags Let's have a look at each item!
  • We spent a very long time searching for a shoe cabinet because it was hard to satisfy all three of our key needs: 1) We needed an open shelf at the bottom for easy access to frequently worn shoes. 2) Leaving the house also involves retrieving or using many small items, like deodorant, sunscreen, tissue paper... and ideally our shoe cabinet should have drawers to contain these 3) We have a big variation in our shoe heights as we own a lot of high-cut shoes. So the shelving had to be adjustable. When we hit upon this cabinet on Taobao, we knew this was it - our dream shoe cabinet combination! And it only cost about $710. It took about a month to ship, but so worth it. If we didn't find this, we would have had to customise one at a significantly higher cost, and I don't think it would have looked half as chic. We love the black + rattan look, and the rose gold handles.
  • Let's look at the pegboard. Right now about half the space is taken up by decor - I might still change it around. In fact it seldom stays the same - since I took this pic, I've shifted things around about three times already. This pic's arrangement isn't even the same as the previous pic, haha. The adaptability is great for reflecting different festive occasions too. The objects on the pegboard serve an important role of setting the mood of the house. Functionality-wise, the current application is for hanging up our caps like a display piece. As our needs evolve, I might remove more of the decorative pieces.
  • I didn't have a mirror in the entryway of my previous house, but now that I have one, I realise what I was missing! It's invaluable to be able to check your appearance before leaving the house. Here you can see a better detail of the wave pattern of the pegboard. The shape of the pegboard was a very intense consideration - we had many choices of more bombastic shapes. But they were either too eye-catching or offered too little pegboard space. This wave pattern, in a beautiful neutral white shade, was such a lucky find. If you compare this with the next photo, you'll find a very subtle detail that not many people notice
  • Do you see it? The wave pattern echoes itself in these Slinka pegs that I chanced upon on Hipvan! It was such a serendipitous coincidence. I love these little details. Your eye may not consciously register these repeating motifs, but your subconscious brain will find this space very soothing. By the way, these hooks are really good to use. The knobs are large, and hanging bags is easy and secure. Most importantly it doesn't damage the bag!
