  • Once in a while, you may come across someone’s home that made you say “Wow! I wish I had a home like this!” This was our own experience of loving people’s homes, and wishing that we could create one for ourselves. And as we looked at many good and bad examples of homes, we summarised the difference down to one word - MOOD. A great home is like a hotel that brings out the best mood in you. Imagine one of the best hotels you have stayed in, it has beautiful aesthetics, well-arranged spaces, music and even aroma. In today’s post, we are going to talk about curating the aesthetics through home styling, to bring out the mood, because you can always play Spotify or bring in an aroma diffuser to add to the mood, but you also need great looks to set the right conditions.
  • Mood is a feeling. And we all know how difficult it is to describe the exact feeling that we want. (Imagine trying to talk about your feelings after watching a beautiful movie such as Inside Out 2, it was not easy, was it?) We resorted to a few rounds of mood boarding, by throwing in all the things that have the slightest connection to the mood that we desire. The first few rounds were messy, but as we started curating and organizing the similarities of the items, we began to see patterns that could be described with words such as “soft”, “cream”, “dark lines”, “plants”, “curves”, “bright”, “spaciousness”. There are no good or bad words, good or bad styles. So the key is that you don’t want to over analyze or worry whether they will fit. Allow your imagination to run free, especially in the first few rounds of the mood boarding process, then sit on it for a few days before you start curating.
  • The next thing is to work on the color palette. We learned from our ID that it is not wise to have too many colors in one home. There are a few criteria to look at: Contrasts - Can one color make another color stand out? Contrasting colors are the mix of light and dark color, warm and cold colors. Compatibility - Are the color compatible with one another? For example, having a bright patch of red in the middle of a cream-based background may not always be a good idea. We picked out all the color tones that we have in our home, so that we can curate styling items that are both compatible and contrasting. Take a look at some of our home styling items for examples.
  • By now, you’d have some idea of the mood you want to curate, the color tones that would work - the last thing is to bring in some of these decoration items that would help bring out the mood. And really, there are many many combinations that you can play with, up to your creativity. Some of the items you can consider to personalize your space and make it more comfortable and visually appealing: ● Cushions and pillows ● Throws and blankets ● Curtains and drapes ● Rugs and carpets ● Decorative ornaments ● Photo frames ● Plants Home styling is a fun and also free flow way of expressing your creativity. The key is to allow yourself to feel the very mood that you want to create for your home, and this would guide you in styling your home. At the end of the day, there are really no right and wrong ways, but ways that you can tell a story, describe your mood, and most importantly, feel at home. How do you know that you have done your home styling right? When you feel satisfied and proud of what you have done, you’d know it is rightfully your homestyle for the season.
