  • Our previous lease unfortunately ended earlier than expected, and we were looking for a new apartment at the peak of rental prices. Having lived in a corridor unit at our previous place, we were looking for a corner unit or something with more privacy, so that we will not be disturbed in the midst of calls. We also had in mind other non-negotiables for the next place we're searching for - more on this below! PS. This view was one of the criteria that sealed the deal for us - read on to find out more :)
  • One of our non-negotiables was an apartment that was bright and airy - preferably even without switching on any lights. We experienced living in houses where the lighting conditions were not the best. A dark, heavy space can feel stifling, and this even resulted in mould and mildew in one of the places we rented. When we viewed this place, we were attracted to how bright the space was, as this was a high floor unit. An added draw was the city views that came with it - we can even catch glimpses of the fireworks during National Day!
  • We wanted the living room to be open and spacious, as we enjoy hosting friends and family. This unit came partially furnished and the furniture from the landlord was something we could work with, since they were mostly in neutral colours. We were able to mix and match certain decor pieces, so that the overall aesthetics of the place remains consistent. However, if you are looking to style your own place and have a specific vision in mind, then you might want to consider renting a bare unit, so that you can exercise your creativity and furnish the space to your heart's content :) This
  • Here's a snap of the living room before we shifted things around! One of our key takeaways, after viewing and renting so many different spaces, is to look beyond the immediate condition of the place and consider its potential. We were able to picture ourselves relaxing at this space or hosting friends and family. Despite the clutter, there is little built-in furniture in this space, which means more room to switch things up.
  • Our current unit comes with two bedrooms and a decently sized dining area. It was important that we had a proper dining area, compared to other layouts that might not have any segregation (for instance, studio apartments). Love putting up seasonal decor to spruce up the space!
  • With a much bigger space now, we find that we spend more time at home. It's easy for us to enjoy a cuppa and pore over a book on a relaxed weekend!
  • As we love cooking hosting, it was important to have multiple burners, preferably gas. Some apartments only come with one or two induction hobs, which is usually insufficient for our use. Although the kitchen space was not well thought out, we were happy to settle for the gas stove and being able to cook our own meals.
  • As we purchased our own bed frame some time back, it was also a deciding factor that the landlord allowed us to move our own bed frame and mattress into the unit. Some landlords would not be pleased at this, as it means that their own bed frames and mattresses will have to be stored away, either in the store room or elsewhere.
  • Here's a snap of how the master bedroom looks like before we moved in. Despite the clutter, it was still bright and nice.
  • The other room is converted into our study room and here's a snap of the gorgeous sunset from the window! We are really lucky to have found a decent space with lovely views that meets most of our non-negotiable criteria. What are the top criteria you guys look out for when deciding on a unit? Share with us in the comments - we'd love to know more! :)
