Not covering up your bomb shelter with a feature wall? No problem!

  • Our entryway, as is typical of most HDBs, hosts our shoe cabinet, DB box and bomb shelter. But unlike a lot of other developments, we didn't over up our bomb shelter door because the space was too narrow to do anything functional with it (e.g. shoe storage), so it would've been purely aesthetic which we didn't feel justified the high cost. (plus, we kinda low key liked the look of the bomb shelter door as the chrome finishing suited our theme) So anyway, we made do by turning it into a hanging area for our work totes (more reason to collect nice totes!) . Some strong magnetic hooks will do the trick. Also got these cute scratching pads for our cat to brighten up the area :)
  • Right next to our entryway is a display wall, which acts as sort of the 'feature wall' in our house. Once again, we wanted to minimize built-ins, so we got these DIY shelves from Taobao. You can even customize the dimensions and components to suit your needs (spent a good amount of time measuring and re-measuring to made sure everything fit). The cost really depends on what you get but all in ours cost ~$400. It's not necessarily the cheapest as far as shelves are concerned, but we really love that its an evolving feature wall! Because the knick-knacks on this wall are ever changing based on our mood and we have a bin full of others that we swap around occasionally to make sure we never get bored!
  • Where our shoe cabinet eventually ended up was at our BD box area instead, as that side was wider. We added a curved edge to the shoe cabinet (which had to jut out a bit to allow for sufficient space for the shoes) as it allows it to better flow into and connect with the adjacent wall. But do keep in mind most IDs charge extra to add these curved edges! Keeping with the curved theme, we love this arched mirror from Hooga that allows us to check ourselves out before heading out. (the poster on the floor was the welcome sign for our wedding that we couldn't bear to throw away, haha)
  • As for the internals, its important to cater for a variety of heights for your shoe cabinets, e.g. the taller ones at the bottom for boots. Also, these shoe organizers from IKEA are really handy to fully utilize the vertical space within the shelves! It often goes on sale for just $1. The DB box tends to get a bit overwhelmed with devices and cables so a cable organizer is really useful as well.
  • Seems like the flower has sprouted a cat. Scratching in action :)
