All along, we'd love to have an open kitchen. However the layout in our previous BTO home doesn't allow us to do that. So we were thrilled to know that it is feasible to have an open kitchen in our current home! Though we love the idea of an open kitchen, we were also hesitant to have it as we have young kids with us. However, one of the ID we met told us how we should not restrict our designs due to this as the kids will grow up one day. We took a leap of faith and also told the kids firmly that they are NOT ALLOWED to go into the kitchen when we are cooking and also NOT ALLOWED to play in the kitchen. As our home is going for a bright and airy theme, we decided on a all-white kitchen. Since our walls and carpentry are all white, we added some pop of colours by getting appliances and cookwares that are brighter in colours. We were skeptical about having a white kitchen initially as we were not sure if it will turn yellowish in no time. More than 2 years down the road and I think the white matt laminate looks as good as before. No regrets! We chose to have glass backsplash as we do not wish to deal with grout issues. I love how we can clean the backsplash easily after cooking. 
We like how we can still eyeball our kids when we are busy in the kitchen. Also it enables us to interact with our guests while whipping up simple meals in the kitchen. On some days, the kids will sit around the peninsula island and watch me prepare their meals. If given another chance, we will still go for an open kitchen in our next home!
