Small Kitchen, Big Ideas: How we minimised clutter in our tiny kitchen

  • We all know how sacred the kitchen countertop surface can be, especially if you have a small-ish kitchen like we do! Because of the limited surface space, we don't store any appliance permanently on the countertop. Instead, we dedicate separate rack to store our regularly used appliances.
  • This is where where we store our top two most used appliance; the air fryer and microwave. We have enjoyed this setup for us despite the amount of dust it accumulates. This is a great option if you want to save on carpentry costs. Although, if we had the choice and money, we definitely would have gone with an enclosed carpentry for lesser maintenance. With this, I do have to dust off the surfaces every once in a while.
  • Instead of leaving items individually on the countertop, it's a good idea to group some items together into tiny sections. In this case, I have placed a cork mat under the oil bottles and pepper mill. This naturally creates a more cohesive look and adds as an additional protector from oil spilling onto the countertop. This same concept can also be applied all around the house!
  • We made use of vertical spaces where we can! Above our sink, we have two dish racks we installed. And since our dish rack is an open one, we are able to utilise the magnetic surface to place magnetic hooks to hang some of our regularly used tools. Another useful way to make use of vertical space is by mounting things on the wall where you can. In this case, I have mounted my automatic hand and soap dispenser using the stickers that came together with it. By doing so, this has made it so much easier for me to clean underneath where water used to pool up so quickly.
  • Here's another instance of how we made use of magnetic surfaces for storage. This is located at the side of my fridge where we make our drinks daily. We're so glad now that we didn't decide to have carpentry covering this area instead.
  • As we had to keep our costs low, we diy-ed this pull out drawer for our condiments for cooking. We love how cost effective and functional this drawer is. These drawers have sliding rails with a very sticky sticker under to paste it onto the cabinet surface.
  • We did the same thing for the cabinet below our pantry. We originally wanted individual drawers for this, but then decided to reduce cost and have this instead. On hindsight, I do think that this probably works out better than a drawer would as I am able to see all the things that I have in one glance.
  • This is still one of my proudest organisation in our kitchen as it makes pulling out a pot or pan so much easier. Although, overtime, with non-stick pans, the sides do get scratched off. I don't find this a big issue. Rather, I look at it as an opportunity to replace the old pans with newer non-stick pans or with stainless steel pans altogether! It's a great way to refresh the kitchen as well.
