  • Hi everyone, we are a little late but welcome to our humble abode! We are Janet and Othniel, a DINK household currently in a 4-room (1108 Sqft HDB flat) in Yishun. This is Othniel's family home that we recently renovated (about 2 years ago)! BUT we also recently sold this house and bought our new home - a resale 5-room (1302 Sqft HDB flat) in Toa Payoh which will only be ready in November this year.
  • Our current house follows a dark, modern, cozy theme. Unfortunately, we don't have many photos of the house before the renovation, so we will have to leave it up to our... words to describe how everything was... Before Janet moved in, we both decided that we needed to spruce things up a little in the house (mainly the living area, flooring and kitchen) and make it comfortable for everyone. We didn't engage any ID for this project makeover and instead, got O's friend who is an architect (he does freelance ID work) to come up with different renders for us to choose from. He then linked us up with his contractor who helped turned our dreams into reality. This was our custom built-in shoe cabinet (we were obsessed with these fluted panels at that stage) with a cut-hole for us to place our house keys /wallet /letters for convenience. The cabinet included 1 tall cabinet that concealed the DB box as well our light switches.
  • O really loves coffee, and so we decided to create this small coffee / tea area! We wanted these curve designs that was not only aesthetic but really lowered the number of times we would accidentally hit or walked into the sharp corners. This cozy coffee area comes with 2 shelves and a bottom cabinet where we keep our tea bags / extra coffee powder and Nespresso coffee pods!
  • Our coffee area was in front of our kitchen. We loved having this space and it is also so convenient for our guests to reach out for the water which is right behind the dining table.
  • Our kitchen - our pride and joy. We enjoyed having this space for us to unwind. This was a space where we re-created recipes we saw online and cooked for each other our childhood favorite meals for each other. Choosing this theme for the kitchen was a no-brainer (or at least we thought). We loved the sleek look, the nostalgic feel and how the light shone through gives that cozy warmth feeling. We considered having only just one side of the kitchen to make the space look "longer" and "wider" but quickly realised that we more space is better than no space!
  • This is the view for the other side of the kitchen, aka the dry side. We installed a shelf on top for the open concept look and mainly stored our glass jars with flour, pasta, sugar and salt. This made it not only convenient for us to reach for the items, but also for the aesthetics of the kitchen. Surprisingly, it didn't collect as much dust as we thought it would. As our flat is an old HDB (37 years to be exact), we didn't have a space for a service yard like the new BTOs have it or a balcony (since we are a 4 room flat). Hence, we converted the end of the kitchen (ensuite with a common toilet) to our service yard! Before our renovation, we did it the old-school way of using bamboo poles to hang it up the ceiling walls. Thank goodness for Steigen now with their automated features and space-saving technology, we no longer have to be afraid of the bamboo poles dropping on our heads!
  • Unlike most HDBs, our rubbish chute was placed inside the house (in our kitchen). This didn't bother us as much (we've heard from our neighbours that the cockroaches and pests would find their way up), in fact it was much more convenient for us to rid our trash! We told our friend to build carpentry around the chute area, in order to have that flushed look and it also had enough space to put our detergents.
