  • After many drafts, we finally settled on this combination for our kitchen! unlike all the colourful kitchens that we have been seeing recently, we werent so gutsy and went with a classic timeless feel for our kitchen as we plan to stay here for long.
  • This is the cooking side of the kitchen
  • The original kitchen layout was that the stove and the sink was at opposite ends. To us this felt impractical cos we have to prepare the ingredients on one side and then turn to the other side to cook.
  • this also causes a lack of counterspace and we value counterspace as our previous house, we had a lack of counterspace and that hinders our cooking preparation and cooking itself.
  • we hacked the whole kitchen so that we can configure the kitchen to our liking.
  • we also hacked the wall between the service yard and the kitchen to improve air flow and lighting. this also allows more space allowance for configuration. because of the hacking, we can extend our countertop on one side above the washing machine and this additional countertop has proven its worth as we put our water dispenser, cutlery to dry off and even clothes when we are taking them out of the washing machine.
  • due to the structural wall constraints, we are unable to have an open concept kitchen. this made me sad initally as this would have been the best scenario to make the house look bigger. however after living here for a year, i realised that a close kitchen is more suitable for our lifestyle. my husband likes to sit at the dining table when working from home and can u imagine his colleagues hearing me sing taylor swift in the background? lol
  • carpentry is in!
  • airing the drawers and cupboards
  • One tip for homeowners doing reno is to try to go down frequently to do checks. Even though our ID was trustworthy and on the ball, some issues cant be seen unless onsite or in actual reality. This was one such example. in our electricial planning, we had planned an electrical point at where the black hole is at in the picture, however when the backsplash went up, we realised that the point was right at where the tap was supposed to be which is dangerous and also impractical. After on site discussion, we decided to do away with this point and that means that the backsplash tile had to be replaced. if i was not there at that point, the top cabinets would have been installed and to rectify this mistake would have been costly and would have delayed the reno process.
  • Try to think of your work flow in the kitchen on normal days to see how many drawers and pull outs you need. a pull out sauce rack is a good to have so that sauce bottles and spices have a designated space to be.
  • laminates are in and waiting for our Kompacplus countertop to be installed.
  • led lights have been installed underneath the cabinets for a cozy glow.
  • looking at the kitchen from the service yard.
  • kompacplus countertop is installed! i have used kompacplus in our previous house and it had held up well over the 5 years we were there. I do not like the marble look so alot of options like sintered stone was out for me at that time. However nowadays the wabi sabi trend is trending and there are stonish sintered stone countertops that you can consider for your home if you are like me who does not like the marble with veins look.
  • not regretting my kompacplus countertop choice though!
  • these kompacplus sink covers were a gift from our ID when she saw that i really wanted it but wasnt willing to splurge on these. these help to elongate the countertop and provide additional countertop when required.
  • the pantry side. we also decided to go with big tiled backsplash. we used to have glass backsplash in our previous house and in time to come, the glass backsplash became sticky and no matter how we tried , the stickness could not be wiped off so we opt for big tiled backsplash this time around. so far, its easy to maintain and fits our theme!
  • the kitchen in natural light. thankfully we hacked away the partition between the kitchen and the service yard so that sunlight and wind is able to flow through the whole house making the house windy!
  • loving the cream laminates and wood combination!
  • We went with a 2 hob stove instead of a 3 hob one as we realised that 2 hobs is enough for our cooking. this also helps with counterspace issue.
  • due to the need for more countertop space, we decided to go with a smaller sink but big enough to put a whole wok in still.
  • the colours all complement each other and bring about a soothing atmosphere to cook in.
  • using kitchen organisation tools to keep the kitchen functional and easier to retrieve stuff.
  • under the sink organisation of cleaning supplies
  • Though the trend now is open shelves in the kitchen, but knowing myself, we opt for top and bottom cabinets that span to the ceiling and to the floor on both sides of the kitchen, cos we have lot of stuff to hide! but since they are hidden, i do not feel stressed to keep it neat and tidy as compared if they were on open shelves.
