Getting our second home is an exciting journey. Having gathered experience from building our first home, we now get to apply those lessons to create an even better second home.
We began by putting together our wish list—a set of criteria that we wanted for our new home. 1. Location: Living near our family is one of the main criteria. 2. Size: We’re looking for a 4-room home. 3. Budget: The first thing we did was to get loan pre-approval for a mortgage to understand our borrowing limit. 4. Proximity to Amenities: We wanted to be close to an MRT station for ease of commute to work. We also hoped to have easy access to markets, coffee shops, and hawker centres. 5. Lifestyle: We wanted a home and neighbourhood that align with our lifestyle preferences. We love having access to parks for greenery, cultural venues, and public transportation. 6. Special Features: After living in a 46-year-old house, we are definitely avoiding an in-house bin chute.
We shortlisted two projects within Ang Mo Kio: a DBSS with a lovely balcony and a freshly MOP-ed resale flat cluster near the MRT. After viewing many units, we finally settled on a unit within the freshly MOP-ed resale flat due to its floor layout and larger kitchen size.
Though the unit is new, the previous owner did not maintain it well.
We guessed they did little renovation with the intention of selling the house when MOP was reached. What you are seeing now is how we have renovated our place to be our dream home.
A little perk we received, though we did not wish for it, is the unblocked view where we can enjoy the orange rising sun, beautiful rainbows and quiet nights with bright moonshine. Because we can do so much stargazing, as if we were seeing stars, we named our home "The Little Starry Loft."
