  • Welcome to our ultimate hosting guide! We're going to share some tips that will definitely apply to hosting parties throughout the year!
  • The first one is TABLE SETTING. We love setting our table differently depending on the dishes we'll serve, the amount of guests we have, and the event. For western meals, we lay knives, and for asian meals, we'd typically put chopsticks instead. There's no one specific way to do this - but just make sure you prepare the cutlery that will actually be needed in a meal.
  • In this version, we've put a lot of bowls out and prepared placemats. This is because we were preparing a Mediterranean spread and it was curry heavy - so we wanted to be able to keep our dining table clean!
  • And for this example, we were serving asian food. Hence, we prepared a soup bowl, soup soon, and chopsticks.
  • Instead of feeling stressed about hosting or styling your stuff, I like to think of feeling creative instead. You can do this by watching tutorial videos or just following other home content creators on Instagram. I learnt this napkin folding trick from a home account on Instagram and it was really fun to do!
  • Our second tip is to have good LIGHTING. We like having a mix of ambient lighting and lamps, statement lights like this pendant lamp, and dimmable lights for the vibes. We completely avoid harsh white lights! This just creates a very cosy atmosphere and your guests will feel a lot more comfortable. We thrifted this woven pendant lamp for only $20!
  • The third tip we have is to keep your guest toilet clean. This means keep it dry, have a new hand towel, have a full roll of tissue, have a toilet spray accessible to guests, and present a nice hand soap. As much as you want your house to be presentable, your guests also want to use your toilet in peace. In case they have to do a number two, having a toilet spray for them to use will put them at ease and removes their paiseh (embarrassment). To be a good host means to put your guests' comfort first!
  • The fourth tip we have is to think about SCENTS. How your house smells is super important! It will make your guests feel like your house is so clean, cozy and comfortable. We like putting different scents around the house so that it also feels like a new scent. We use a wide array of products: from candle warmers, scented candles, diffusers, wax melts, potpourri, and room sprays.
  • And just like you saw our Monstera plant above, then you know that our fifth tip is to have a lot of PLANTS or FLOWERS. Plants or flowers are a great way to add colour to a place, and to change the vibe up of the place (without committing to permanent decor). For example, during Chinese New Year, we used a lot of prosperity plants, pussy willows, and birds of paradise. It gave off Chinese New Year vibes, but didn't take up space in our storage afterwards because we could discard them once they've wilted or died. I also just think plants and flowers are very relaxing and pretty to look at!
  • That's all folks! Of course, besides these hosting and styling tips, do remember to keep your house clean. Keep clutter away, vacuum and mop your floors and wipe your surfaces!
