Underrated & Budget-Friendly Ways I Reduce Visual Clutter At Home

  • After living in my home for about 1.5 years, I have found affordable ways to organise my home. In my home office, I used the IVAR IKEA cabinet and shelving into my workspace. However, due the short depth, I decided to extend the desk by adding a pull out tray that doesn't require any drilling. It uses a tightening mechanism which is easy to adjust. Not only does it help extend table space for me to work, at the end of the day when I'm done with work, I could push the tray back in. This clears up space on my main desk and also hides away all the keyboard and mouse.
  • As I have a lot of opening shelving on my IVAR shelf, I needed enclosed boxes to reduce the dust. Here, I'm using the shoe boxes from Daiso, which I've honestly been using for so long and I still reach out for more as it's so versatile!
  • Throughout the entire home, you'll see that I use lots of patterned curtains to block out areas. This helps reduce the visual clutter and adds warmth into the space. I did make these curtains myself with fabric I bought from Chinatown.
  • As someone who values privacy, I have a curtain on my main door as well. I enjoy opening the main door from time to time to let air in, especially when it rains, but I am uncomfortable with people/neighbours passing by and staring into my home. My living room sofa is within clear view from the main entrance which we enjoy lounging in. So, naturally, I would like to relax without the extra peering eyes. While I can't stop people from staring, I can control what they see 😉
  • I sewed this curtain as well. This curtain is a little different that the others because I deliberately made it reversible so that I see the same design when I'm inside or outside my home. I also added a little cutout in the middle taking inspiration from Japanese styled curtains and also for air to ventilate a little better.
  • As our service yard faces our next door neighbour's service yard, our kitchen is essentially in full view. For us, it makes sense to not feel like our neighbours can see what we're doing all the time. This curtain is the same design as our main door, just in a different colour to match our walls better.
  • We didn't have the extra funds to have a fixed spice rack installed with our carpentry. So, we got this pull out drawer rack and installed it on our own. This has made it a lot easier to reach out the sauces at the back.
  • Similarly, we have the same drawer mechanism in our dry pantry area. I just chose a different design for this. This has been so convenient to have and worked out for the better. We still have a long way to go with our organisation journey in our home. But we're not in a rush as we're going to take our time to decide how we will live around the organisation and design layout.
