Where is the mess? We hid it!

  • Welcome to our living room! In our old house, the living room only had open shelving and minimal storage so kids' toys were strewn everywhere and the mess was most unpleasant. Therefore, in house version two, we knew we wanted things to be clean, presentable and uncluttered. This meant lots of storage but without looking too bulky and cramped. Did we succeed? Do read on to see!
  • A view from the other side of the living room. The brief to ID was to create a tv console area with lots of storage and an embedded tv. Many rounds of drafting were done to tweak the dimensions of each panel and space to make sure that things didn't look too boxy or busy. Serious self doubt and design fatigue set in towards the end when choosing the laminate combinations but glad that it came out well in the end.
  • Here is our sofa area. It's a 4 seater with an ottoman, which we thought offered more flexibility than an L shaped sofa. We cover it with a throw in a cushy, plush fabric because... Kids.😅 We're seriously considering getting a pair of paintings to put behind the sofa to make the wall less bare, but have not found one that we truly like yet. Or maybe minimalism is good too. Advice?
  • As previously mentioned, we are incapable of maintaining plants so this jellycat monstera was the perfect addition to the corner of the shelving. It always makes us smile a little inside when we see it.
  • For added cosiness, we created a false ceiling and made some cove lights.
  • I've said this before and will say it again, ceiling fans are soooo useful and practical in our climate. This kdk one comes with tricolored lights too so you only need one electrical point for it.
  • The open shelving area was added so that we won't have just one monstrous chunk of cabinets. Thankfully, most of the decor items from our previous home could be reused in them!
  • Another part of the open shelves. The backlights add a nice glow to the shelves and are great for cosy nights with some tea. Also, if you notice, the sides of the cabinet are curved to add softness to the look and to prevent painful bumps. We've come to the end of the post. Thanks for reading and hope you have many good hours in your own living rooms!
